In anticipation of the upcoming holidays, we asked interior designer and stylist – Teri Mixson – for tips on how to create a beautiful tabletop. Teri has 25 years of experience in residential and commercial interior design and styling. She is responsible for product presentations in several high-end manufacturer showrooms at the High Point and Las Vegas furniture markets. She also does set design for studio and location photography, as well as video at luxury residences through the United States.

Teri: I love to design around a specific holiday and generally use this as my starting point. From there, I determine if I want to use more traditional holiday colors or if I want to employ a color palette that really accentuates the room. In the photograph above, we used red and green as our primary colors with accents of silver and gold.

Teri: Candles are my favorite centerpiece. They are something I usually have on-hand and they add height to a tabletop without interrupting sightlines. Candles also create a peaceful ambiance and add a warming, romantic sparkle.

Teri: I like incorporating flowers and greenery into my tabletop design. They add a pop of color, an element of softness and a fresh scent that really ties it all together. I always try to look for in-season bouquets that match the season I’m decorating for. To create a particularly impactful environment, integrate the flowers and greenery into other places in the room – in the environment highlighted above, we added them to the bookcases to create extra punch.

Teri: Always think about the sightlines of your guests. To facilitate unobstructed conversation, use glass accessories of varying heights. The transparency of the glass allows guests to see through the décor, while the varying heights allows for an array of views. If you’re able, think about placing a little gift or special token at each place setting. Your guests will appreciate your thoughtfulness. LHB Design Team: If you could only give us one decorating tip, what would it be?

Teri: Try to create impact without clutter. Use simple elements that don’t crowd or overwhelm. But perhaps most importantly, remember to relax and enjoy the festive environment you’ve created with the people who matter most to you!

Revisiting some of the great pieces that I spotted at High Point this past October, I wanted to take a closer look at Lexington, to share what they offered this season. As one of my sponsors at Market, I am always eager to tour their vast headquarters, filled with new upholstery and case goods introductions where there is something for everyone. I can always count on their Tommy Bahama Collection, finding perfect pieces for warm weather climates, made from woven raffia, rattan and other easy to live with Island-inspired materials. Their traditional assortment captures the casual easygoing lifestyle in places like Florida and California, and I can always find a great bar cart (such as their new Veranda tea cart below) to get excited about. There are plenty of other new collections to see, including new modern trad introductions from Sligh that were done in dark woods with gold accents. As far as trends to watch, the arrival of more sophisticated pieces pairing mixed materials, darker, richer wood finishes and gold metal accents is on the rise. Feeling glamorous and restrained, these new pieces are stylish, focal-point pieces that add sophistication. Below, I share my favorite finds from my friends at Lexington, who I have gotten to know from both moderating a What’s New What’s Next Young Designer panel in their showroom, and visiting them in High Point.

As a category, desks are on the rise. With more people working from home and remotely, the home office is a place to pay attention to. Why not update command central with a dose of beauty? The new Brentwood Writing Desk includes plenty of storage with three drawers across the top and a place for books in the base legs, which are contained within an oversized Greek Key flourish. Such a chic detail! With an Art Deco vibe, the piece is trimmed in a wide gold band which stands out from the dark grained wood. Used in a den or office, this piece is finished on both sides, giving it star status from any angle.

Another option, The Melrose Writing Desk, sits on a gold metal u-shaped base. A rich wood top and sophisticated gold hardware channel the Mad Men era, while being perfect for today with a large surface area and deep drawers.

Need elegant storage that is more than an etagere? The Beverly Palms File Chest, with a drawer front and four shelves has plenty of space for books, objects and can be used for a library or living room, depending upon where the stylish storage is most needed.

It’s easy to get wanderlust with the resort appropriate pieces from Tommy Bahama– they instantly transport you, making you feel like you are sitting looking out over a water view with a Palm frond blowing in the wind. Feel like Hemmingway in Key Largo with the Enchanted Isle Desk with intricate x detailing on three sides and a railing along the top.

One area that tends to get neglected in rooms is the corner. Why not use a slim etagere in the underutilized spot to make the most of storage? The Atlantis Etagere, with its cool, intricate woven pattern up the sides features four shelves and a drawer.

I immediately gravitated towards the Flamingo Octagonal End Table, with its inlaid green penshell top and great octagonal shape. Interesting and unique, it makes a nice sofa-side piece.

Oh how I love a good bar cart! Or tea… With the Veranda Tea Car, both beverages can be accomodated, so you can go from tea time to cocktail hour and have a spacious bi-level surface. The raffia-wrapped handles add a nice Victorian-era touch, and the high sides mean things are not as likely to go falling off the edge.

A casual perch to read a book or lounge the day away, the Agave Chair has a chevron-patterned woven base and detailed back that support two thick cushions making a comfortable seat paramount.

In part one of this post, we looked at the contemporary lifestyle setting: Tres Chic. In part two of the series, we look at a new traditional setting: Royal Kahala Black Sands. Both achieve a serene ambiance, but take two very different design paths to get there.

Classically designed, this outdoor living space exudes refinement. The neutral tones used in the area rug, sofas and swivel chair allow the colors of nature to take center stage. The pops of color achieved through the pillows, flowers and table accessories keep the group from feeling overly formal.

Deep seating, plush pillows and incredible craftsmanship make this outdoor seating area feel like it belongs indoors. Taking a closer look at the artistry of the pieces, we notice an interlaced scroll motif beneath a protective glass top and a complex hand-finish that radiates deep umber colorations.

Adding an element of new-traditional styling are versatile bunching tables. They can be used individually as end tables or grouped together to create a cocktail table. A custom tortoise shell finish on aluminum takes the look to an entirely new level when contrasted with its leather-like wraps. A herringbone pattern top in all-weather wicker completes the piece.

The next setting achieves tranquility by utilizing an octagonal fire pit that offers both warmth and soft lighting. Four swivel chairs frame the firepit providing comfortable seating and easy conversation. The interlocking x-pattern ties the group together and creates a designer look.

Alfresco dining takes on an air of sophistication by keeping a foundation of neutral tones enhanced by subtle paisley patterns on the cushions, pops of orange hues through the patio tile and flowers, and a border of lush greenery.

Taking a closer look at the furniture detailing, one notices graceful scroll patterns merging with quatrefoil designs to create a unique, yet timeless dining surface. The chair features turned legs and a scroll pattern on its back, giving the setting a cohesive look.

Relaxation is taken to a new level with these refined lounge chairs. Classic turned legs and scrolled arms are enhanced with a neutral base cloth and subtle pin-stripe motif. Paisley kidney pillows complete the traditional aesthetic.

In addition to frame shape, color and fabric also influence the feel of a group. This traditional color board, for example, showcases classic paisley patterns, menswear-inspired pinstripes and light-toned fabrics that allow you to dress the timeless group up or down by changing out the pillows and accessories. This palette is ideal for those looking for a great base upon which to build.

Contrary to the first color palette, the next color board takes on a bolder personality with a mixture of patterns and orange hues. Note, in the example below, the awning stripe on the two accent chairs below enhanced by the paisley pattern kidney motifs. Blending classic patterns with a vibrant burnt orange creates a cohesive, yet conversation-starting look.

Regardless of preferred design aesthetic, everyone can create a functional and stylish outdoor space by incorporating deep seating, color and craftsmanship into their desired space.
